Qatar Airways – Office Headquarters

Project Overview:

Main Contractor: MACE
Architect: PLP Architecture
Materials: Limestone
Completed: 2019

Qatar Airways UK Headquarters and Ticket Sales Showroom is located in Mayfair, Central London. The six-storey building sits adjacent to a Grade II* listed James Wyatt building and replaces two outdated structures that were inconsistent with the character of the local Conservation Area. The new stone facade is a fusion of local tradition and Qatari influence, whilst respecting the surrounding area’s character.

The stone for the façade was selected; graded; sawn; profiled; worked and supplied by our Cadeby Stone factory. Then installed by Grants, working with Mace, the main contractor. Hand-patinated bronze recesses separate and contrast with the feather-shaped elements of the stone, implemented by Cadeby’s Donatoni five axes CNC and finished by the masons at the Cadeby Stoneworks. The sculpted and crafted CNC detailing, helped to create a façade which features imbedded fossils and shells that lend it a rich texture that becomes smooth when viewed from a distance.

The windows feature deep reveals that create additional shadow and visual interest on the façade, an approach eminently suited to the use of stone.

The stone is fixed back to a concrete frame that follows the form of the façade, which measures only around 250 m², yet achieves a strong architectural presence through the quality of its design and the precision of the stonework execution.

Sustainability played a key factor in the building’s design and the project has a BREEAM Excellent rating in recognition of its environmental sensitivity.
